The Office of Academic Support Services provides a variety of services to students,
potential students, faculty, staff, and graduates of the institution including academic
assessment and placement services, services for students living with disabilities,
and civil rights compliance.
This office is available to provide students with strategies and opportunities in
a safe, respectful, and confidential environment. The services provided are designed
to help students discover themselves, develop life-long learning skills and to achieve
academic success. The Office of Academic Support Services provides services to students
on a short-term basis only. Students who require long-term services are referred to
agencies outside of the institution.
The Academic Support Services Office provides the following services:
- Administers the ACT COMPASS Placement Test (Computerized)
- Administers the ACT Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP)
- Provides academic advisement to assist students in the development of academic goals
- Provides transitional counseling to graduating sophomore’s (Sophomore Transfer Day)
- Provides information on study skills, time management, reaching academic goals, transitioning
from high school to college, retention, etc.
- Provides academic, career, and social counseling to students individually and on a
group basis, as well as assists students in overcoming personal difficulties, self
esteem issues, adjustment to college life, and difficulties in social interactions,
etc.
- Provides students a place to obtaining general information and voicing concerns in
a confidential setting.
- Provides academic counseling to students that are placed on academic probation or
suspension
- Provides reasonable accommodations to students living with a disability
- Provides domestic violence awareness programs to faculty, staff, and students
- Provides disability awareness programs to faculty, staff, and students
- Provides sexual harassment awareness programs to faculty, staff, and students
- Provides students with academic and personal referrals (English Lab, Tutorial services,
Department of Human Services, Housing Authorities, Mental Health Services, Vocational
Rehabilitation Services, etc.)
PLACEMENT TESTING
The Office of Academic Support Services provides academic placement testing services
and academic assessment testing services. The Academic Support Services Officer administers
the COMPASS TEST, which is a Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support instrument
that was developed by ACT to help postsecondary institutions place students into appropriate
course levels. In addition to the COMPASS, the Academic Support Services Officer administers
the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP), which is a standardized,
nationally-normed assessment program from ACT that enables postsecondary institutions
to assess, evaluate, andenhance the outcomes of their general education programs.
